וַיֵּ֥רַע אֶל־יוֹנָ֖ה רָעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַיִּ֖חַר לֽוֹ׃

Καὶ ἐλυπήθη Ἰωνᾶς λύπην μεγάλην, καὶ συνεχύθη ·

καὶ προσεύξατο πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπεν Ὦ Κύριε, οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου, ἔτι ὄντος μου ἐν τῇ γῇ μου; διὰ τοῦτο προέφθασα τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσείς, διότι ἔγνων ὅτι σὺ ἐλεήμων καὶ οἰκτίρμων, μακρόθυμος καὶ πολυέλεος καὶ μετανοῶν ἐπὶ ταῖς κακίαις.

et orávit ad Dóminum, et dixit: Obsecro Dómine, numquid non hoc est verbum meum, cum adhuc essem in terra mea? propter hoc præoccupávi ut fúgerem in Tharsis: scio enim quia tu Deus clemens, et miséricors es, pátiens et multæ miseratiónis, et ignóscens super malítia.

And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, [was] not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou [art] a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹנָה֙ מִן הָ־עִ֔יר וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב מִקֶּ֣דֶם לָעִ֑יר וַיַּעַשׂ֩ ל֨וֹ שָׁ֜ם סֻכָּ֗ה וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב תַּחְתֶּ֨יהָ֙ בַּצֵּ֔ל עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִרְאֶ֔ה מַה־יִּהְיֶ֖ה בָּעִֽיר׃

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν Ἰωνᾶς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἀπέναντι τῆς πόλεως · καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῷ ἐκεῖ σκηνὴν καὶ ἐκάθητο ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς ἐν σκιᾷ, ἕως οὗ ἀπίδῃ τί ἔσται τῇ πόλει.

Et egréssus est Ionas de civitáte, et sedit contra oriéntem civitátis: et fecit sibímet umbráculum ibi, et sedébat subter illud in umbra, donec vidéret quid accíderet civitáti.

So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.

καὶ προσέταξεν Κύριος ὁ θεὸς κολοκύνθῃ, καὶ ἀνέβη ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς τοῦ Ἰωνᾶ τοῦ εἶναι σκιὰν ὑπεράνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ, τοῦ σκιάζειν αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν αὐτοῦ · καὶ ἐχάρη Ἰωνᾶς ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ χαρὰν μεγάλην.

Et præparávit Dóminus Deus héderam, et ascéndit super caput Ionæ, ut esset umbra super caput eius, et protégeret eum: laboráverat enim: et lætátus est Ionas super hédera lætítia magna.

And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made [it] to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.

Et cum ortus fuísset sol, præcépit Dóminus vento cálido et urénti: et percússit sol super caput Ionæ, et æstuábat: et petívit ánimæ suæ ut morerétur, et dixit: Mélius est mihi mori quam vívere.

And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, [It is] better for me to die than to live.

And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, [even] unto death.

καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος Σὺ ἐφείσω ὑπὲρ τῆς κολοκύνθης, ὑπὲρ ἧς οὐκ ἐκακοπάθησας ἐπ᾽ αὐτήν, καὶ οὐκ ἐξέθρεψας αὐτήν, ἣ ἐγενήθη ὑπὸ νύκτα καὶ ὑπὸ νύκτα ἀπώλετο.

Et dixit Dóminus: Tu doles super héderam, in qua non laborásti, neque fecísti ut crésceret: quæ sub una nocte nata est, et sub una nocte périit.

וַֽאֲנִי֙ לֹ֣א אָח֔וּס עַל־נִינְוֵ֖ה הָעִ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ בָּ֡־הּ הַרְבֵּה֩ מִֽשְׁתֵּים־עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה רִבּ֜וֹ אָדָ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יָדַע֙ בֵּין יְמִינ֣־וֹ לִשְׂמֹאל֔וֹ וּבְהֵמָ֖ה רַבָּֽה׃

ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ φείσομαι ὑπὲρ Νινευὴ τῆς πόλεως τῆς μεγάλης, ἐν ᾗ κατοικοῦσιν πλείους δώδεκα μυριάδες ἀνθρώπων, οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν δεξιὰν αὐτῶν ἢ ἀριστερὰν αὐτῶν, καὶ κτήνη πολλά;

Et ego non parcam Nínive civitáti magnæ, in qua sunt plus quam centum vigínti míllia hóminum, qui nésciunt quid sit inter déxteram et sinístram suam, et iuménta multa?
