וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ בְנֵֽי־יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל כָּל הָ֨־עֵדָ֤ה מִדְבַּר־צִן֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב הָעָ֖ם בְּקָדֵ֑שׁ וַתָּ֤מָת שָׁם֙ מִרְיָ֔ם וַתִּקָּבֵ֖ר שָֽׁם׃

Καὶ ἦλθον οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ, πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγή, εἰς τὴν ἔρημον Σεὶν ἐν τῷ μηνὶ τῷ πρώτῳ, καὶ κατέμεινεν ὁ λαὸς ἐν Καδής · καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν ἐκεῖ Μαριάμ, καὶ ἐτάφη ἐκεῖ.

Venerúntque fílii Israel, et omnis multitúdo in desértum Sin, mense primo: et mansit pópulus in Cades. Mortuáque est ibi María, et sepúlta in eódem loco.

ויבאו בני־ישׂראל כל העדה מדבר־צן בחדשׁ הראישׁון וישׁב העם בקדשׁ ותמת שׁם מרים ותקבר שׁם

Then came the children of Israel, [even] the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

וְלֹא־הָ֥יָה מַ֖יִם לָעֵדָ֑ה וַיִּקָּ֣הֲל֔וּ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְעַֽל־אַהֲרֹֽן׃

καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὕδωρ τῇ συναγωγῇ, καὶ ἠθροίσθησαν ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρών.

Cumque indigéret aqua pópulus, convenérunt advérsum Móysen et Aaron:

ולא־היה מים לעדה ויקהלו על־משׁה ועל־אהרן

And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

וַיָּ֥רֶב הָעָ֖ם עִם־מֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֵאמֹ֔ר וְל֥וּ גָוַ֛עְנוּ בִּגְוַ֥ע אַחֵ֖ינוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

καὶ ἐλοιδορεῖτο ὁ λαὸς πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγοντες Ὄφελον ἀπεθάνομεν ἐν τῇ ἀπωλίᾳ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν ἔναντι Κυρίου.

et versi in seditiónem, dixérunt: Utinam periissémus inter fratres nostros coram Dómino.

וירב העם עם־משׁה ויאמרו לאמר ולוי גוענו בגוע אחינו לפני יהוה

And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

וְלָמָ֤ה הֲבֵאתֶם֙ אֶת־קְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֔ה אֶל הַ־מִּדְבָּ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה לָמ֣וּת שָׁ֔ם אֲנַ֖חְנוּ וּבְעִירֵֽנוּ׃

καὶ ἵνα τί ἀνήγαγες τὴν συναγωγὴν Κυρίου εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ταύτην ἀποκτεῖναι ἡμᾶς καὶ τὰ κτήνη ἡμῶν;

Cur eduxístis ecclésiam Dómini in solitúdinem, ut et nos et nostra iuménta moriámur?

ולמה הבאתם את־קהל יהוה אל המדבר הזה למות שׁם אנחנו ובעירנו

And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

וְלָמָ֤ה הֶֽעֱלִיתֻ֨נוּ֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם לְהָבִ֣יא אֹתָ֔נוּ אֶל הַ־מָּק֥וֹם הָרָ֖ע הַזֶּ֑ה לֹ֣א ׀ מְק֣וֹם זֶ֗רַע וּתְאֵנָ֤ה וְגֶ֨פֶן֙ וְרִמּ֔וֹן וּמַ֥יִם אַ֖יִן לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

καὶ ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἀνήγαγες ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου παραγενέσθαι εἰς τὸν τόπον τοῦτον; τόπος οὗ οὐ σπείρεται, οὐδὲ συκαῖ οὐδὲ ἄμπελοι οὐδὲ ῥόαι, οὐδὲ ὕδωρ ἐστὶν πιεῖν.

Quare nos fecístis ascéndere de Ægýpto, et adduxístis in locum istum péssimum, qui seri non potest, qui nec ficum gignit, nec víneas, nec malogranáta, ínsuper et aquam non habet ad bibéndum?

ולמה העליתנו ממצרים להביא אתנו אל המקום הרע הזה לא מקום זרע תאנה גפן ורמון ומים אין לשׁתות

And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it [is] no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither [is] there any water to drink.

וַיָּבֹא֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה וְאַהֲרֹ֜ן מִפְּנֵ֣י הַקָּהָ֗ל אֶל־פֶּ֨תַח֙ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל פְּנֵי־הֶ֑ם וַיֵּרָ֥א כְבוֹד־יְהוָ֖ה אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ פ

καὶ ἦλθεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρὼν ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου, καὶ ἔπεσαν ἐπὶ πρόσωπον · καὶ ὤφθη ἡ δόξα Κυρίου πρὸς αὐτούς.

Ingressúsque Móyses et Aaron, dimíssa multitúdine, tabernáculum fœ́deris, corruérunt proni in terram, clamaverúntque ad Dóminum, atque dixérunt: Dómine Deus, audi clamórem huius pópuli, et áperi eis thesáurum tuum fontem aquæ vivæ, ut satiáti, cesset murmurátio eórum. Et appáruit glória Dómini super eos.

ויבא משׁה ואהרן מפני הקהל אל־פתח אהל מועד ויפלו על פניהם וירא כבוד־יהוה אליהם

And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

καὶ ἐλάλησεν Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων

Locutúsque est Dóminus ad Móysen, dicens:

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

קַ֣ח אֶת הַ־מַּטֶּ֗ה וְהַקְהֵ֤ל אֶת הָ־עֵדָה֙ אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן אָחִ֔יךָ וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֧ם אֶל הַ־סֶּ֛לַע לְעֵינֵיהֶ֖ם וְנָתַ֣ן מֵימָ֑יו וְהוֹצֵאתָ֨ לָהֶ֥ם מַ֨יִם֙ מִן הַ־סֶּ֔לַע וְהִשְׁקִיתָ֥ אֶת הָ־עֵדָ֖ה וְאֶת בְּעִירָֽ־ם׃

Λάβε τὴν ῥάβδον, καὶ ἐκκλησίασον τῇ συναγωγῇ σὺ καὶ Ἀαρὼν ὁ ἀδελφός σου, καὶ λαλήσατε πρὸς τὴν πέτραν ἔναντι αὐτῶν, καὶ δώσει τὰ ὕδατα αὐτῆς · καὶ ἐξοίσετε αὐτοῖς ὕδωρ ἐκ τῆς πέτρας, καὶ ποτιεῖτε τὴν συναγωγὴν καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν.

Tolle virgam, et cóngrega pópulum, tu et Aaron frater tuus, et loquímini ad petram coram eis, et illa dabit aquas. Cumque edúxeris aquam de petra, bibet omnis multitúdo et iuménta eius.

קח את המטה והקהל את העדה אתה ואהרן אחיך ודברתם אל הסלע לעיניהם ונתן מימיו והוצאת להם מים מן הסלע והשׁקית את העדה ואת בעירם
8
Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת הַ־מַּטֶּ֖ה מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּֽהוּ׃

καὶ ἔλαβεν Μωυσῆς τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν ἀπέναντι Κυρίου, καθὰ συνέταξεν Κύριος ·

Tulit ígitur Móyses virgam, quæ erat in conspéctu Dómini, sicut præcéperat ei,

And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as he commanded him.

וַיַּקְהִ֜לוּ מֹשֶׁ֧ה וְאַהֲרֹ֛ן אֶת הַ־קָּהָ֖ל אֶל־פְּנֵ֣י הַסָּ֑לַע וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם שִׁמְעוּ־נָא֙ הַמֹּרִ֔ים הֲמִן הַ־סֶּ֣לַע הַזֶּ֔ה נוֹצִ֥יא לָכֶ֖ם מָֽיִם׃

καὶ ἐξεκκλησίασεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ἀαρὼν τὴν συναγωγὴν ἀπέναντι τῆς πέτρας, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Ἀκούσατέ μου, οἱ ἀπειθεῖς · μὴ ἐκ τῆς πέτρας ταύτης ἐξάξομεν ὑμῖν ὕδωρ;

congregáta multitúdine ante petram, dixítque eis: Audíte rebélles et incréduli: Num de petra hac vobis aquam potérimus eícere?

ויקהלו משׁה ואהרן את הקהל אל־פני הסלע ויאמר להם שׁמעו־נא המרים המן הסלע הזה נוציא לכם מים

And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

וַיָּ֨רֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת יָד֗־וֹ וַיַּ֧ךְ אֶת הַ־סֶּ֛לַע בְּמַטֵּ֖הוּ פַּעֲמָ֑יִם וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים וַתֵּ֥שְׁתְּ הָעֵדָ֖ה וּבְעִירָֽם׃ ס

καὶ ἐπάρας Μωυσῆς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπάταξεν τὴν πέτραν τῇ ῥάβδῳ δίς, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὕδωρ πολύ, καὶ ἔπιεν ἡ συναγωγὴ καὶ τὰ κτήνη αὐτῶν.

Cumque elevásset Móyses manum, percútiens virga bis sílicem, egréssæ sunt aquæ largíssimæ, ita ut pópulus bíberet et iuménta.

וירם משׁה את ידו ויך את הסלע במטהו פעמים ויצאו מים רבים ותשׁת העדה ובעירם
11
And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts [also].

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָה֮ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאֶֽל־אַהֲרֹן֒ יַ֚עַן לֹא־הֶאֱמַנְתֶּ֣ם בִּ֔י לְהַ֨קְדִּישֵׁ֔נִי לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לָכֵ֗ן לֹ֤א תָבִ֨יאוּ֙ אֶת הַ־קָּהָ֣ל הַזֶּ֔ה אֶל הָ־אָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי לָהֶֽם׃

καὶ εἶπεν Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ἀαρών Ὅτι οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε ἁγιάσαι με ἐναντίον υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ εἰσάξετε ὑμεῖς τὴν συναγωγὴν ταύτην εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν δέδωκα αὐτοῖς.

Dixítque Dóminus ad Móysen et Aaron: Quia non credidístis mihi, ut sanctificarétis me coram fíliis Israel, non introducétis hos pópulos in terram, quam dabo eis.

ויאמר יהוה אל־משׁה ואל־אהרן יען לא־האמנתם בי להקדישׁני לעיני בני ישׂראל לכן לא תביאו את הקהל הזה אל הארץ אשׁר־נתתי להם

And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

הֵ֚מָּה מֵ֣י מְרִיבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־רָב֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקָּדֵ֖שׁ בָּֽם׃ ס

τοῦτο ὕδωρ ἀντιλογίας, ὅτι ἐλοιδορήθησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἔναντι Κυρίου, καὶ ἡγιάσθη ἐν αὐτοῖς.

Hæc est aqua contradictiónis, ubi iurgáti sunt fílii Israel contra Dóminum, et sanctificátus est in eis.

הם מי מריבה אשׁר־רבו בני־ישׂראל את־יהוה ויקדשׁ בם ויאמר משׁה אדני יהוה אתה החלת להראות את עבדך את גדלך ואת ידך החזקה אשׁר מי אל בשׁמים ובארץ אשׁר יעשׂה כמעשׂיך וכגבורתיך אעברה נא ואראה את הארץ הטובה אשׁר בעבר הירדן ההר הטוב הזה והלבנון ויאמר יהוה אל משׁה רב לך אל תוסף דבר אלי עוד בדבר הזה עלה אל ראשׁ הפסגה ושׂא עיניך ימה וצפונה ותימנה ומזרחה וראה בעיניך כי לא תעבר את הירדן הזה וצוי את יהושׁע בן נון וחזקהו ואמצהו כי הוא יעבר לפני העם הזה והוא ינחל אתם את הארץ אשׁר תראה וידבר יהוה אל משׁה לאמר רב לכם סוב את ההר הזה פנו לכם צפונה ואת העם צוי לאמר אתם עברים בגבול אחיכם בני עשׂו הישׁבים בשׂעיר וייראו מכם ונשׁמרתם מאד אל תתגרו בם כי לא אתן לכם מארצם ירשׁה עד מדרך כף רגל כי ירשׁה לעשׂו נתתי את הר שׂעיר אכל תשׁברו מאתם בכסף ואכלתם וגם מים תכירו מאתם בכסף ושׁתיתם

This [is] the water of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח מֹשֶׁ֧ה מַלְאָכִ֛ים מִקָּדֵ֖שׁ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ אֱד֑וֹם כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אָחִ֣יךָ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֵ֥ת כָּל הַ־תְּלָאָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר מְצָאָֽתְנוּ׃

Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Μωυσῆς ἀγγέλους ἐκ Καδὴς πρὸς βασιλέα Ἐδὼμ λέγων Τάδε λέγει ὁ ἀδελφός σου Ἰσραήλ Σὺ ἐπίστῃ πάντα τὸν μόχθον τὸν εὑρόντα ἡμᾶς ·

Misit intérea núntios Móyses de Cades ad regem Edom, qui dícerent: Hæc mandat frater tuus Israel: Nosti omnem labórem, qui apprehéndit nos,

וישׁלח משׁה מלאכים מקדשׁ אל־מלך אדום כה אמר אחיך ישׂראל אתה ידעת את כל התלאה אשׁר מצאתנו

And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:

וַיֵּרְד֤וּ אֲבֹתֵ֨ינוּ֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים וַיָּרֵ֥עוּ לָ֛נוּ מִצְרַ֖יִם וְלַאֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃

καὶ κατέβησαν οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν εἰς Αἴγυπτον, καὶ παρῳκήσαμεν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ἡμέρας πλείους, καὶ ἐκάκωσαν ἡμᾶς οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι καὶ τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν ·

quo modo descénderint patres nostri in Ægýptum, et habitavérimus ibi multo témpore, afflixeríntque nos Ægýptii, et patres nostros:

וירדו אבתינו מצרימה ונשׁב במצרים ימים רבים ויריעו לנו המצרים ולאבתינו

How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:

וַנִּצְעַ֤ק אֶל־יְהוָה֙ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע קֹלֵ֔נוּ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח מַלְאָ֔ךְ וַיֹּצִאֵ֖נוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְהִנֵּה֙ אֲנַ֣חְנוּ בְקָדֵ֔שׁ עִ֖יר קְצֵ֥ה גְבוּלֶֽךָ׃

καὶ ἀνεβοήσαμεν πρὸς Κύριον, καὶ εἰσήκουσεν Κύριος τῆς φωνῆς ἡμῶν, καὶ ἀποστείλας ἄγγελον ἐξήγαγεν ἡμᾶς ἐξ Αἰγύπτου · καὶ νῦν ἐσμὲν ἐν Καδής, πόλει ἐκ μέρους τῶν ὁρίων σου.

et quo modo clamavérimus ad Dóminum, et exaudíerit nos, miserítque ángelum, qui edúxerit nos de Ægýpto. Ecce in urbe Cades, quæ est in extrémis fínibus tuis, pósiti,

ונצעק אל־יהוה וישׁמע קולנו וישׁלח מלאך ויוציאנו ממצרים והנה אנחנו בקדשׁ עיר קצה גבולך

And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we [are] in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border:

נַעְבְּרָה־נָּ֣א בְאַרְצֶ֗ךָ לֹ֤א נַעֲבֹר֙ בְּשָׂדֶ֣ה וּבְכֶ֔רֶם וְלֹ֥א נִשְׁתֶּ֖ה מֵ֣י בְאֵ֑ר דֶּ֧רֶךְ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ נֵלֵ֗ךְ לֹ֤א נִטֶּה֙ יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֔אול עַ֥ד אֲשֶֽׁר־נַעֲבֹ֖ר גְּבוּלֶֽךָ׃

παρελευσόμεθα διὰ τῆς γῆς σου · οὐ διελευσόμεθα δι᾽ ἀγρῶν οὐδὲ δι᾽ ἀμπελώνων, οὐδὲ πιόμεθα ὕδωρ ἐκ λάκκου σου · ὁδῷ βασιλικῇ πορευσόμεθα, καὶ οὐκ ἐκκλινοῦμεν δεξιὰ οὐδὲ εὐώνυμα ἕως ἂν παρέλθωμεν τὰ ὅριά σου.

obsecrámus ut nobis transíre líceat per terram tuam. Non íbimus per agros, nec per víneas: non bibémus aquas de púteis tuis: sed gradiémur via pública, nec ad déxteram nec ad sinístram declinántes, donec transeámus términos tuos.

נעבר נא בארצך לא נעבר בשׂדה ובכרם ולא נשׁתה מי בור דרך המלך נלך לא נסור ימין ושׂמאל עד אשׁר־נעבר גבולך
17
Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink [of] the water of the wells: we will go by the king ’s [high] way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.

And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ Παρὰ τὸ ὄρος παρελευσόμεθα · ἐὰν δὲ τοῦ ὕδατός σου πίωμεν ἐγώ τε καὶ τὰ κτήνη, δώσω τιμήν σοι · ἀλλὰ τὸ πρᾶγμα οὐδέν ἐστιν, παρὰ τὸ ὄρος παρελευσόμεθα.

Dixerúntque fílii Israel: Per tritam gradiémur viam: et si bibérimus aquas tuas, nos et pécora nostra, dábimus quod iustum est: nulla erit in prétio difficúltas, tantum velóciter transeámus.

ויאמרו אליו בני־ישׂראל במסלה נעלה ואם ממימיך נשׁתה אני ומקני ונתתי מכרם רק אין־דבר ברגלי אעבר

And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without [doing] any thing [else], go through on my feet.

And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

nec vóluit acquiéscere deprecánti, ut concéderet tránsitum per fines suos. Quam ob rem divértit ab eo Israel.

Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him.

Καὶ ἀπῆραν ἐκ Καδής · καὶ παρεγένοντο οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ, πᾶσα συναγωγή, εἰς Ὣρ τὸ ὄρος.

Cumque castra movíssent de Cades, venérunt in montem Hor, qui est in fínibus terræ Edom:

And the children of Israel, [even] the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.

Προστεθήτω Ἀαρὼν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ, ὅτι οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν δέδωκα τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ, διότι παρωξύνατέ με ἐπὶ τοῦ ὕδατος τῆς λοιδορίας.

Pergat, inquit, Aaron ad pópulos suos: non enim intrábit terram, quam dedi fíliis Israel, eo quod incrédulus fúerit ori meo, ad Aquas contradictiónis.

יאסף אהרן אל עמו כי לא יבוא אל הארץ אשׁר נתתי לבני ישׂראל על אשׁר־מריתם את פיי למי מריבה

Aaron shall be gathered unto his people: for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the water of Meribah.

And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered [unto his people], and shall die there.

And Moses did as the LORD commanded: and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.

Omnis autem multitúdo videns occubuísse Aaron, flevit super eo trigínta diébus per cunctas famílias suas.

And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, [even] all the house of Israel.
